Not all tenants are equipped with the skills to successfully sustain their housing. Being a tenant comes with a host of responsibilities and tasks, and part of the role of the case manager is to help tenants integrate into the community, to meet their obligations of tenancy, and, most importantly, to stay housed. This training offers strategies, based on various evidence-based practices, to ensure that housing-based case managers are focusing on tenants’ most important skills, are timing interventions effectively, and are making use of appropriate resources. Attendees learn about the related concepts of Critical Time Intervention, Harm Reduction, Supported Employment, Housing First, Recovery and Wellness, Person Centered Services and Motivational Interviewing, all of which can help case managers and their property management partners to increase housing retention rates and create sustainable tenant-staff relationships. Cultural Competency 101: How Assumptions Impact Our Work Regardless of the program setting, organizations strive to offer services that are culturally sensitive to the service recipients.  With an ever-changing demographic of clients, maintaining cultural competency among staff has to be a deliberate and planned goal.  This training focuses on skill-building based on four of the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) Standards on Cultural Competency: Ethics and Values, Self Awareness, Service Delivery, and Language Diversity.  Experiential exercises are used to illustrate the concept of culturally-bound frames of reference and how to use awareness of these frames to heighten cultural sensitivity.   Although the NASW Standards are used, this training is useful for all staff in human service settings, regardless of role.  At the end of this training, attendees will be better equipped to offer culturally-sensitive services to a wide range of persons. Cultural Competency 201: Culture & Communication in the Workplace In addition to providing services to diverse service recipients, most programs are also staffed by a broad range of individuals, each with unique communication styles and values.   The quality of services offered often depends on the degree to which effective communication takes place amongst all levels of staff, and certain critical sentiments can get lost in translation when staff members are unable to effectively exchange points of view.  This training targets the manner in which staff members relate to one another and the significant impact on the program environment and on the persons being served.  Through understanding and practicing an “intention-impact” model, staff members come to see how individuals may react to the same statement in different ways.  With this understanding, it is possible to address differences in a less defensive and more constructive manner.  Attendees will leave this workshop with greater confidence to acknowledge various points of view regarding statements and actions, and to communicate the impact of their colleagues’ statements. NY/NY III is the agreement between New York City and New York State to create 9,000 units of supportive housing for a wide range of disabled homeless persons in New York City. The agreement marked the largest commitment to creating housing for homeless persons. This half day training is targeted to human service providers working to access housing for special needs populations. The NY/NY III Agreement provides housing options for Chronically Homeless Single Adults or Families, or those at risk of becoming Chronically Homeless. This housing targets several populations, including Youth Aging out of Foster Care; and Single Adults or Families who have a Serious Mental Illness, HIV/AIDS or another Disabling Clinical Condition and/or a Substance Use Disorder. The training is interactive and reviews the eligibility criteria, how to apply, and resources to complete an effective HRA 2010e application. .   In prison and jail, individuals with mental illness often experience a series of traumatizing (or re-traumatizing) events that increase their mental and emotional vulnerability. These experiences can create challenges with re-entry into the community. This training is designed for those who are or will be working with individuals living with mental illness who have a justice-involved history. Specifically, it explores cultural adaptations common during incarceration, and how these behaviors can influence the adjustment to "living on the outside"; it then provides tools for engaging and assisting these individuals as they transition back into community settings. Case scenarios are presented, as well as a "Prison Survival Quiz" that reviews some of the situations/decisions that an inmate may encounter when incarcerated, and the impact of those decisions after. Person-Centered Planning is a process designed to assist individuals in making plans for their future based upon what is uniquely important to them. It relies on a collaborative, non-coercive approach that is respectful and responsive to a person’s preferences and needs, ensuring that the person’s values guide all decisions. This training offers information on how to shift from a system-centered approach to a person-centered approach, and shares tips to engage and assess an individual’s person-centered goals. Documentation serves as the blueprint and footprint for the Person-Centered Planning process. The training also offers practical guidance on how to support this process through service planning documentation, as well as other relevant charting issues. Read More

Suicide is a major pubic health concern and is among the leading causes of death in the United States. Recent studies reveal that suicide in some populations is on the rise. Service providers are challenged with offering support to a number of special needs populations who are at greater risk of suicide than the norm. National efforts have focused on identifying risk factors and strategies to prevent suicide. This training provides an overview of both suicide assessment and prevention, and offers vital statistics with an emphasis on risk factors that contribute to potential suicide. Intervention strategies, including assessment on the continuum of suicide and ensuring the person’s safety are presented, and attendees will learn how to create a plan of safety for individuals.
